Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) is best known as the parent of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, but a fresh report that it may start selling cloud computing and AI model access to outside customers pushed the stock up 2.7% to 618.9 dollars, deep inside a 52 week range of 540.18 to 682.5 dollars.

The move reflects investor enthusiasm for a pivot that would turn Meta's data center buildout into a revenue line rather than a pure cost center. Bloomberg reported the company is forming a business unit to sell excess computing capacity and to offer developer access to its Muse Spark models, an arrangement similar to how Amazon Web Services rents out models through Bedrock. Meta would keep operating the chips and data centers itself while charging outside developers for access.

Meta has spent years pouring capital into data centers, largely to support its own AI ambitions in advertising, recommendation systems and Reality Labs projects. Bernstein analyst Madison Rezaei estimates the company already controls roughly 20 gigawatts of global capacity, with another 14 gigawatts expected online within a few years. That scale, she wrote, rivals established cloud providers outright.

Mark Zuckerberg has been signaling this possibility for months. In May, he told investors that selling compute was
